The American National Space Administration launched a space vessel from Cape Kennedy on January 14 1972. Its crew consisted of George Taylor, John Landon, Thomas Dodge and Maryann Stewart. The craft was known as Liberty 1, and nicknamed the Icarus. Taylor, Landon and Dodge found Stewart, dead due to a malfunction, and abandoned the ship in the year 3978. The surviving crew members were captured by armed gorillas. Dodge was killed, Landon rendered unconscious, and Taylor is taken to Ape City. Taylor escaped to a shoreline, where he discovered the remains of the Statue of Liberty, revealing that this "alien" planet was actually Earth long after a nuclear war.
